Chief sheridan smith 1961 - 1989
Sheridan attended schools in Wilton and finished his education after joining the United States Army. He served four years and received a Medal of Honor for saving another man’s life. Sheridan began his career with Farmington Police Department in 1961 moving up the ranks to Sergeant by 1975 and Chief by 1979. In October 1974 Sheridan was awarded for outstanding bravery by the Maine Chiefs of Police Association. After serving 10 years as Chief he retired in August of 1989. Sheridan was the fourth longest serving employee of the department serving 28 years. After leaving the Farmington Police Department, Sheridan worked for the University of Maine at Farmington Public Safety Department for 10 years. He was active in his community, coaching Little League in the area and was a member of the Farmington Elks Lodge. He was an active participant, holding several positions over the course of 40 years, in the Maine Harness Horseman’s Association.
