Joyce was the first woman to join the Farmington Police Department. She started out as a crossing guard and then became a part-time officer working football games and dances. In 1981 a full-time position opened, and Joyce was selected as the first woman on the force. While at the department Joyce taught DARE classes for four years and was promoted to Corporal in 1992. The Corporal positions were phased out in 1996 by the department and Joyce returned to an officer position until her retirement. Joyce’s awards through the Farmington Police Department include employee of the year in 1998 and the good conduct award. She retired in 2001 after serving 20 years.
